1,000 Activities Before Kindergarten1,000 Activities Before Kindergarten

Sing, talk, read, write, and play your way to kindergarten. The 1,000 Activities Before Kindergarten program encourages parents and caregivers to complete 1,000 early literacy activities with their child before he or she reaches kindergarten.

How to Begin

  • Visit the Youth Services department during your next library visit to pick-up an activity folder
  • In the folder you will find your first activity log, activity ideas, tips, a free book, and more.
  • Keep track of 200 activities at a time, marking off each time you and your child finish an activity.
  • For every 200 activities you share together, bring the activity log and your child to the library to receive a sticker, a prize, and your next activity log.

  • Do the same activity as many times as you or your child like.
  • Have friends or family members sing, talk, read, write, and play with your child.
  • Bring your child to story times or special programs at the library (these all count!).
  • Let your child pick books they want read to them.
  • Let them listen to their favorite CDs.
  • Have your child retell the book to you in their own words.
  • Don't let the end goal discourage you:
    • 1 activity per day × 3 years = 1,095 activities
    • 3 activities per day × 1 year = 1,095 activities
